PRISM SB01: Coaxial Motor Mount Defect

Released on 02/14/2023

Title

Original PRISM Coaxial Motor Mount Defect

Effectivity

PRISM aircraft that were shipped from December 2020 - July 2021.

NOTE: Any PRISM or PRISM Sky aircraft that was manufactured after July of 2021 is NOT affected by this safety bulletin!

Reason

Our team has identified a defect in the motor mounts used on the original batch of PRISM coaxial aircraft shipped from December 2020 - July 2021. This defect may lead to an in-flight motor mount separation.

Description

It has come to our attention that the motor mount that was shipped with the original PRISM coaxial aircraft could potentially be prone to separation in flight. Although this design is proven with thousands of flights and flight hours on them, out of an abundance of caution, we wish to issue a Safety Bulletin to cease the flying of these original motor mounts and will provide new motor arm sets to all customers. In the last year, we have now seen two separate incidents where the top motor has separated from the main motor mount, causing a crash.

In July of 2021, the motor mounts that were used in all aircraft and any aircraft afterwards were made of a reinforced motor mount, and thus the problem has no longer been seen on any PRISM or PRISM Sky aircraft manufactured after July of 2021.

To be very clear: If your aircraft was manufactured after July of 2021, you have the latest strengthened mount and can continue flying without issue.

NOTE: This Safety Bulletin only applies to Coaxial X8 motor mounts. This does not apply to Quadcopter aircraft.

Is My Aircraft Affected?

To identify whether or not your aircraft is affected by this Safety Bulletin, simply check the number of screws that secure the motor mount to the arm boom. If your motor mount has 4 screws holding the motor mount in place, you are not affected by this Safety Bulletin. If your motor mount has 2 screws holding the motor mount in place, you are affected by this Safety Bulletin and requires immediate action for replacement.

Compliance

MANDATORY. This safety bulletin must be accomplished as soon as possible.

Recommendations

  1. Replace all affected motor mounts with new design immediately

  2. Acknowledge you have read and understood the reason for the Safety Bulletin by contacting Watts Innovations for instructions for repair/replacement.

Replacement Process

If your aircraft has the original motor mounts, please reach out to us immediately and we will provide you with the latest upgraded motor mount set free of charge. Once you have reached out to Watts Innovations and have received your replacement arms with the upgraded motor mounts, follow the instructions for Attaching Motor Arms for installation.
