Configuration for Operators

This page explains the process for configuring Remote ID for PRISM Sky.

Remote ID was added to AuterionOS for PRISM Sky version 1.2.4 (or newer) and Watts AMC version 1.0.4 (or newer). In order for Remote ID to function, the AOS and Watts AMC need the previously mentioned version to be installed on your PRISM Sky and Ground Control Station (GCS).

Location Source

In accordance with Part 89, Standard Remote ID Systems (RIDS), such as PRISM Sky, are required to meet location accuracy requirements for both the aircraft and ground control station (GCS).

Aircraft

The aircraft must be designed with an integrated GNSS system that, at a minimum, uses GPS with SBAS (WAAS) augmentation as its location source.

PRISM Sky is designed and produced with two (2) ARK RTK GPS devices pre-installed for its location source. Each ARK RTK GPS unit utilizes one (1) Ublox F9P GPS sensors installed in each module that supports SBAS (including WAAS in the US) and communicates to the vehicle via CAN bus.

Vehicle Wi-Fi

In order for the aircrafts location source and the RIDS on PRISM Sky to be fully operational, the Wi-Fi functionality must be disabled. To ensure the aircraft location source is is configured properly follow the instructions below:

  1. Power on and connect to PRISM Sky using the GCS

  2. Once connected, in AMC navigate to Vehicle Setup

  3. Locate and select the Wi-Fi page

  4. Disable the vehicle Wi-Fi by unchecking the box

NOTE: For bench testing purposes and/or to download flights logs onboard the aircraft, Wi-Fi can be reenabled for this convenience but must be disabled again in order for flight to comply with the RID rule under Part 89. If you do not disable Wi-Fi you will not be allowed to arm the aircraft.

GCS

The GCS needs to have access to an accurate 3D GPS position, as this information needs to be broadcast for Remote ID.

The GCS can either be designed with an integrated GNSS system (not recommended) or use an external USB device (recommended) however both must use GPS with SBAS (WAAS) augmentation as its location source and NMEA protocol - required.

Recommended GCS Location Source:

  • KONTACT - a handheld ground control station designed and produced by Watts Innovations operating on Windows 10 or Ubuntu integrated with a built-in USB GNSS system module that supports SBAS (including WAAS in the US) augmentation and NMEA.

  • External USB GPS Device - a USB GPS device that supports SBAS (including WAAS in the US) augmentation and uses NMEA protocol.

KONTACT

Windows 10

The GPS module built-in KONTACT is pre-configured as COM30. To configure inside of Watts AMC follow the below instructions to configure a External USB GPS Device and set the baud rate in Watts AMC to 115200. Ubuntu

The GPS module built-in KONTACT is pre-configured and requires no additional steps.

External USB GPS Device

Users that choose to use this method instead of KONTACT must use a USB GPS device that supports SBAS (including WAAS in the US) augmentation and uses NMEA protocol.

Both location source options communicate with the GCS via USB and are configured through the instructions below:

  1. Close AMC

  2. Connect the external USB GPS device (skip if using KONTACT)

  3. Determine COM port via Device Manager>Ports (COM & LPT)

  4. Open AMC and navigate to Settings>General. Then scroll down to AutoConnect to the following devices

  5. Ensure that UDP is enabled

  6. Ensure RTK GPS is disabled

  7. Select the corresponding COM port for NMEA GPS Device

  8. Set the the NMEA GPS Baud Rate (9600 minimum)

  9. Close and reopen AMC

NOTE: Set Baud Rate according to your USB GPS device manufacturers recommendations. If setting the Baud Rate to 9600 does not work, try increasing to the next available Baud Rate and repeat Step 9 above.

Interference

By default the Remote ID Wi-Fi Beacon channel is set to Channel 1 on the 2.4GHz band which allows for the communication link (Silvus or DoodleLabs) radios to access to any remaining Channels on the 2.4GHz band. By default the DoodleLabs air and ground radios that come preinstalled with PRISM Sky are set to Channel 7 on the 2.4GHz band which allows for enough separation on the 2.4GHz band to allow the RIDS and communication system to function properly while reducing any potential interference.

NOTE: The Wi-Fi Beacon channel cannot not be changed by the end user. If needing to change the channel on the communication radios, it is advised against using Channel 1 for the flight-critical communication (DoodleLabs air and ground only) radios to prevent interference. Silvus offers a unique feature that allows for channel hoping and therefore this does not apply.
